Often used as adornments on other pieces of artwork, gemstones or minerals can be characterized often in situ using different types of techniques such as Raman spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence.  The crystal structure in many of these types of materials can provide very specific information with regard to the family of gemstone, and secondary aspects of spectral data and are affected by the chemical composition of the crystal allow for determination of the type of gemstone or mineral.

The Center for Art Materials Analysis does not analyze gemstones to determine grade or value.
